Abstract

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) represent serious health problems during pregnancy, potentially causing significant complications for both mothers and fetuses. Determining antibiotic sensitivity is of paramount importance for healthcare providers. The aim of this study is to highlight the prevalence, bacterial etiologies, and antimicrobial resistance profiles of UTIs among pregnant women in Benghazi, Libya. Methods: A total of 170 urine samples were collected from pregnant women from October 2025 to May 2026. Samples were cultured, and isolates were identified using morphological and biochemical tests. Results: Out of 170 samples, 123 (72.35%) were confirmed to have UTIs. The most common pathogen was Escherichia coli, followed by Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. UTIs were most prevalent in the 18–22 age group (39.8%) and the third trimester of pregnancy (56.9%). High susceptibility was observed for Imipenem and Gentamicin. Conclusion: Routine screening for bacteriuria during pregnancy is essential to prevent adverse maternal and fetal outcomes.
